A history of Canadian Glass Production
Glass production first started in Canada in the mid-1800s. The two
most successful companies were the Dominion Glass Company in Montreal
and Consumers Glass in Hamilton. With the introduction of automated
machinery in the 1920s, thousands of products such as lamps and bottles
were mass-produced by the Dominion Glass Company.
Canada's largest and longest-running manufacturer of glass tableware.
The Opus rock, juice and water glasses were produced by Dominion Glass
in consultation with local industrial designers. Though Dominion Glass
eventually phased out production of most of its housewares,
their St. Clair division continued to focus on producing glass products.
The Dominion Glass Co. (now Consumers Packaging) is the largest manufacturer
of glass containers in Canada. |
