Minimalist storage
Ever since the launch of the CD player in the late 1980s, many
designers have tackled the problem of storing all those plastic
cases. Michael Santella's
minimalist design employs a simple bar of
extruded aluminum to store fifteen of your favourite discs.
Technical challenge
In order to make a CD holder that could hold fifteen disks,
Santella needed a twenty-five centimetre aluminium extrusion.
Unfortunately, the standard length in manufacturing was only
twenty centimetres, making it difficult to find a professional
mill to create his design. Santella eventually found an accommodating
fabricator in Pickering, Ontario, and more than 100,000 units
have been produced to date |
