Not just any old garbage can
Rashid used design to transform the ordinary garbage can into
a piece of sculpture. The fluid,
sensual curves of the Garbo have become a trademark of Rashid's
work (some say as a result of his fascination with voluptuous
female forms). Technological advances in moulding polypropylene
allowed Umbra to achieve the thinness of the skin-like translucent
plastic.
Canadian design superstar
The name "Garbo" is a play on "garbage" and
Greta Garbo, a movie
star from the 1920s - 40s. Rashid himself has gained star
status.
His work ranges from products, furniture and fashion, to interior
design and a new D.J. table called Kreemy. He recently published
a book about his work called I Want to Change the World. |
